26 December 2004. On that day, in Aceh and elsewhere in the Indian Ocean region, disaster
struck without warning. Death came, riding the back of a killer tsunami, swallowing up nearly
everything in its path including the lives of almost one hundred thousand people. Coastland
areas were inundated; whole villages were destroyed; and families were torn apart. Hundreds of children became orphans; thousands of parents were now, suddenly, childless. Tens of thousands of people were left with nothing to hold onto except pain. In Aceh, even two months after the tsunami, the scope of the disaster remained evident. Ruins lay everywhere. Unburied corpses continued to be found. Large ships remained on their sides in the streets and roads where the wave had flung them. Millions of memories haunted the air.

Serambi, a docu-feature film produced by Christine Hakim Film, follows the spiritual journey
of the Acehnese people after the tsunami. Directed by Garin Nugroho and three younger
filmmakers Viva Westi, Tonny Trimarsanto, and Lianto Luseno. Serambi presents a portrait of
post-tsunami Aceh through the visualization of three separate tales.

26 Desember 2004. Pada hari itu, di Aceh dan di tempat lain di wilayah Samudera Hindia,  terjadi bencana tanpa peringatan. Kematian datang, mengendarai punggung tsunami pembunuh, menelan hampir segala sesuatu di jalannya termasuk kehidupan hampir seratus ribu orang. Wilayah pantai dibanjiri; seluruh desa hancur; dan keluarga terpecah belah. Ratusan anak-anak menjadi yatim piatu; ribuan orang tua sekarang, tiba-tiba, tanpa anak. Puluhan ribu orang tidak memiliki apa-apa untuk ditahan kecuali rasa sakit. Di Aceh, bahkan dua bulan setelah tsunami, skala bencana tetap jelas. Ruin ada di mana-mana. Mayat yang belum dikubur terus ditemukan. Kapal-kapal besar tetap berada di sisi mereka di jalan dan jalan-jalan di mana gelombang telah melemparkan mereka. Berjuta-juta kenangan mengejutkan udara.

Serambi, sebuah film dokumenter yang diproduksi oleh Christine Hakim Film, mengikuti perjalanan spiritual orang-orang Acehnese setelah tsunami. Film ini disutradarai oleh Garin Nugroho dan tiga pembuat film muda Viva Westi, Tonny Trimarsanto, dan Lianto Luseno. Serambi menyajikan potret Aceh setelah tsunami melalui visualisasi tiga cerita terpisah.
